Anna Kournikova - Magazines

Anna Kournikova - Total Sport Magazine [United Kingdom] (January 1999)

This is Anna on the 1999 cover of Total Sport, Anna Kournikova appears in a striking red outfit that is so short you get a glimpse of her knickers.
The bright red of her dress connotes passion and danger which may be a side of her people don’t usually see.
It is believed that women wear red in order to be sexually appealing to men.
Alongside this image is the caption ‘Anyone for Anna?’ which suggests she’s something you can take and enjoy.
As you can see in the image, she is holding a tennis racket like a guitar which relates to the sub heading ‘why women’s tennis rocks in 1999’ as though the magazine is trying to make the sport more appealing and potentially sound a bit rebellious.
The article then goes on to talk about Kournikova’s success in the sport despite her not actually doing that well therefore they are making her seem better than she is.

Almost all of the sports magazines she featured in didn’t focus on her sporting success at all, instead on her family life, boyfriends and nightlife. Further on in her career she became more and more exposed in the photoshoots used for the front cover of magazines. A lot of them focusing on her body and beauty using words such as 'hot' to describe her. Lots of magazines did this with one using the caption ‘A date with Anna’ as well as Ace Tennis magazine calling her a ‘super babe’ rather than ‘super star’ which would be the correct term to associated with successful athlete.
